C60 and Vitamin C: Understanding the Comparison

April 14, 2018

The Origin of the Comparison

You may have seen claims that C60 is “172 times more powerful than Vitamin C” as an antioxidant. This claim comes from a single laboratory study and is frequently repeated online. Let’s look at what the research actually says — and what it doesn’t.

What the Study Showed

The comparison originates from in vitro (test tube) experiments measuring the antioxidant capacity of C60 compared to Vitamin C. In that specific lab setting, C60 demonstrated a higher capacity for neutralising certain free radicals.

Why This Comparison Is Limited

There are important reasons to be cautious about this claim:

  1. In vitro ≠ in vivo. Results in a test tube don’t automatically translate to the human body. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and bioavailability all differ.

  2. Different mechanisms. Vitamin C and C60 interact with free radicals through different mechanisms. Comparing them with a single metric oversimplifies the picture.

  3. Vitamin C is well-studied in humans. Decades of clinical research support Vitamin C’s role in immune function, collagen synthesis, and skin health. C60 has no comparable body of human research.

  4. Single study, not replicated. The 172x figure comes from one study. It has not been confirmed by multiple independent research groups.

  5. No clinical trials on C60 in humans. There are no published human clinical trials comparing C60 to Vitamin C in real-world outcomes.

A More Accurate Way to Think About It

Rather than calling C60 “172x more powerful,” a more accurate statement would be:

“In laboratory tests, C60 showed higher antioxidant capacity than Vitamin C. However, this comparison has not been validated in human clinical trials, and the two substances work through different mechanisms.”

Should You Replace Vitamin C with C60?

No. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient with decades of research behind it. C60 is an interesting supplement with promising but preliminary research. They serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.

If you’re considering C60 as a supplement, it can be used alongside a healthy diet — not as a replacement for established nutrients.

The Bottom Line

  • C60 shows interesting antioxidant properties in lab studies
  • The “172x” figure is from a single in vitro study, not a clinical trial
  • Vitamin C has a well-established human research base; C60 does not
  • Both can be part of a wellness routine, but C60 is not a replacement for Vitamin C
